BOURNE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — As Cape Cod gears up for tourism season, maintenance work on the Bourne Bridge this week has reduced traffic to one lane in both directions.
While there are still questions about the project's funding, both the Bourne and Sagamore bridges are getting replaced as part of an estimated $4.5 billion-dollar project.
The Army Corps of Engineers is also set to do the work on the Bourne throughout most of May.
On Monday, some drivers were left frustrated navigating the lane changes and closures.
Others said it has been smooth sailing.
"I had no problems getting through the traffic this morning," one driver said.
Another driver said he has already seen people not following signs and taking advantage of closed lanes.
"Some people are kind of cutting into the oncoming traffic sometimes," he said. "It's kind of dangerous."
This part of the preliminary work on the Bourne is scheduled to be finished on May 20.
The Cape Cod Bridges Project is scheduled to take six years to replace both bridges that Massachusetts officials said are obsolete and too costly to maintain.
The two bridges were built in 1935.
Ultimately, officials said the new bridges will be safer while improving traffic flow.
