HANOVER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — PETA is calling on the White House to enact an animal-product-free Easter celebration instead of the annual egg roll.

It's not a new concept. When the egg shortage crisis occurred a few years ago, residents opted for potatoes as a cost measure. But some parents say handing their kids a basket filled with red russets isn't exactly a showcase of parental prowess. The look of complete bafflement from a few local moms was quite evident.

"I wouldn't trust kids with potatoes," one parent said.

When broached with the idea of replacing the classic Easter egg with a potato, some parents expressed concern about what might happen once the kids find the spuds.

"I know the kids might start throwing them at each other or something," another parent said.

According to History.com, the first Easter egg hunt took place in Germany during the 17th century. The eggs symbolized life and represented the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
